The earliest known depictions of the Tree of Life date to ancient Egypt around 3100 BC — but similar symbolism appears across Celtic, Kabbalistic, Norse, and Assyrian traditions, making it one of the few symbols that emerged independently across civilizations that never met. The ancient Egyptians believed the tree connected heaven and earth — branches symbolizing the sky, roots reaching into the underworld — a bridge between everything visible and everything not. Celtic Druids believed the tree was a literal doorway between the spirit world and the human world, through which the gods could communicate.
